Early life and education

Dr. Subodh Agarwal was born on 17 December 1965 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. His family's ancestral roots are reported to lie in Uttar Pradesh, though he has been closely associated with Jaipur, his birthplace, throughout his life and career.

He built an unusually extensive academic record alongside his administrative career:

He was reported to have participated in international delegations, including being hosted at a discussion involving New Zealand's Prime Minister. He also spoke at public forums on the intersection of technology and governance for instance, at an event in Bengaluru, he discussed the shift from governments using artificial intelligence to deliver public services toward broader societal questions about AI, automation, and data privacy, drawing on commentators such as Thomas Friedman to frame concerns about surveillance and behavioral targeting in everyday digital life.

Personal life

Agarwal is married to Rolee Agarwal, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer who has served as a Commissioner of Income Tax. The couple's son, Shubh Agarwal, is also an IRS officer serving in customs, and their daughter, Shagun Agarwal, was reported to have received a National Advertising Award in 2024.
